121 Autos have provided you with some extensive guides regarding driving in Spain, Speeding and Accidents. We have just updated our Car buyers guide and our Tire Guide. Its funny to think that the only thing that connects a vehicle to the road is the tires, yet it is one of the most overlooked items on a car. Driving around recently i noticed bald tires, flat tires and even on one car the wrong size on every wheel. We cant stress enough how important it is to have 1. The correct tire size and load 2. Tread left on the wheel 3. To have them pressurized correctly. For the sake of 400-600EUR for a set of decent tires, which should last you 40-60,000+km depending on your driving it is well worth it. Dont skimp and save 20 Euros there or 40 Euros there when purchasing tires, make sure you get the right ones from day one. When changing the front right for example, change the front left at the same time, even if there is tread left on it. You can move this to the spare wheel if needed. By doing this you keep help keep the traction of the car in the wet the same on both sides of the front. However it is the back tires that are more important when it comes to grip and tread as was proved by Tiff Neddell on 5th Gear a number of years ago. In the wet a vehicle is more likely to spin out due to the back tires being bald than the front. One thing that had never occured to me previously was the load weight. I personally drive a VW Passat which is a fairly heavy car standard, but recently i did an airport run with 4 people and 4 of the largest suitcases i had ever seen.. Even at the correct tire pressure the tires still looked like they were ready to buckle. Food for thought. Anyway... read our tire guide you can find it by clicking below.
